1-to-1 Tuition with John Wakeling

Astrophotography can feel overwhelming β€” unfamiliar settings, complex gear, and a lot of conflicting advice. My 1-to-1 astrophotography lessons are designed to simplify the process and help you capture the night sky with confidence.

Whether you want to photograph the Milky Way, Moon, or deep-sky objects, these lessons guide you through the full workflow β€” from planning and setup to capture and final processing.

From landscapes to night skies β€” capturing everything Between Earth & Sky.

Who These Lessons Are For

These lessons are ideal if you:

  • Are new to astrophotography and want a clear starting point

  • Have tried night photography but struggled with focus or results

  • Want to understand your gear rather than guess settings

  • Are moving from landscapes into night-sky photography

  • Want help capturing and processing your own data

Lessons are suitable for beginners and early-intermediate astrophotographers.

What You’ll Learn

Each lesson is tailored to your goals and equipment, but typically includes:

🌠 Planning & Setup

  • Understanding sky conditions, moon phases, and light pollution

  • Target selection and framing

  • Camera, tracker, mount, or smart telescope setup

  • Polar alignment (including methods without Polaris)

πŸ“· Capture & Technique

  • Camera and capture settings

  • Achieving accurate focus at night

  • Exposure strategies for different targets

  • Managing tracking, guiding, and common issues

🧠 Problem-Solving

  • Diagnosing star trails, soft focus, and noise

  • Adapting to conditions on the night

  • Building a repeatable capture workflow

All learning takes place in real night-sky conditions, not simulated examples.

Optional Post-Processing Session (Highly Recommended)

What This Includes

  • Calibration frames explained simply

  • Stacking your data

  • Noise reduction and detail recovery

  • Turning raw data into a finished image

This session helps you understand why edits work, not just how to follow steps.
